THE LECTURE that he’s been giving for a number of years is not-so-subtly called “Kill Your Lawn.” Ecological horticulturist Dan Jaffe Wilder knows that starting over and creating an entire native habitat instead of a lawn isn’t for everyone. Easy! (Cuttings and ‘Britzensis’ willow photos courtesy of Vermont Willow.) One year I ordered two bundles of shorter cuttings, stuck them in a corner of one raised bed in my vegetable garden, and had 10 rooted young shrubs ready to transplant into their permanent positions. Those get inserted a foot into the ground upon arrival, spaced a couple of feet apart. They also sell long rods (again, unrooted cuttings) for making living fences, domes and tunnels in either 7- or 9-foot lengths (depending whether you’ll be shipping Fedex or UPS, respectively). The nursery sells 8-10 inch dormant, unrooted cuttings in bundles of five you simply insert most of the twig when it arrives in the ground (like all but the top couple of inches). (Hopefully Michael’s recommendations above are a help.) The hardest part with this ultra-easy plants: figuring out which one to buy. VERMONT WILLOW NURSERY sells cuttings of willows from a preposterous number of varieties. I learned that in England-that you want just three or four stems to replace the one you’ve coppiced, and if you cut too high, it promotes a lot of messy growth.” So what do you think, gardeners? Are we feeling brave? ordering and planting willows “Really, really hard-don’t leave a foot of stem, like you often read about, but just an inch. “Cut them down to the ground,” he said, without a moment’s hesitation. I WAS SOUNDING too tentative about the rejuvenation pruning-called coppicing-that I was about to do, and Michael Dodge could hear it in my voice. Best for bees to make honey from: Vermont Willow Nursery, now under new ownership) has a whole list of the willows best-suited to the task.“It flowers quite freely, and has long, droopy foliage an inch wide, and 6 inches long that turns yellow in fall.” (Note from Margaret: I love the long, narrow, silvery-blue foliage of the rosemary willow, Salix elaeagnos, which also goes gold in fall.) Great foliage (and gold fall color): “ Salix acutifolia ‘Blue Streak’ is just so handsome,” says Michael about a variety that’s too often overlooked. So for a fedge or fence it’s really great–and even gracilis or nana makes a dense bush, 4 by 4 feet, that they won’t jump over.” “The purpurea willows are deer-resistant. fedges) or otherwise: “This is important to tell gardeners about,” says Michael. Best deer-resistant willows, for fencing and hedging (a.k.a.Unfortunately, it’s mixed up in the nursery trade with the warm gold-stemmed variety ‘Chermesina’-another beauty, but not fiery red. (I love the crazy-looking male flowers in the photo up top, not just the pink stage.) ‘Mt. Aso’ has “such a dense stem of flowers,” says Michael-some have 30 catkins along a space of 2 feet of stem. We narrowed it down to some best-of willow selections from about 200 in his collection-best willows for outsmarting deer winter interest abundant flowers and even best for making honey if you’re a beekeeper-and I also got a brutal tutorial on willow pruning (also known as coppicing) to share with you. He was alluding to the possibilities of the genus Salix-the willows to which he has been devoting the recent chapter of his impressive horticultural career. ‘IT’S ENDLESS,” plantsman Michael Dodge (former owner of Vermont Willow Nursery) was saying over the phone a few years back. SideNotes also gives you the option to share notes with anyone you want. You may have liked the sharing feature in Apple Notes. Alongside the rich customization options, you also get a task manager within the app where you can add or make changes to your tasks. You can also use specific colors for them. You can even assign keyboard shortcuts to call Side Notes. There are multiple options on how the notes are supposed to look, and the one I liked on them was the code-like UI.īesides the code-like UI, you also get plain text and standard (markdown) options for UI. You can change how and where the app should appear according to your preference. The app will only appear when you want to, without affecting what you currently view on your Mac, like an overlay. Can’t ask for more than that from a task manager.SideNote, as its name suggests, SideNote will always be on your side, and that too, without making any distractions for you. I guess the best measure is that all the tasks I put into it, get done. Overall though, the app seems to understand what it is, and is not trying to do too much. A few annoyances are not auto-capitalising the beginning of tasks on iOS, and I would like it to do better with natural language interpretation. It still has some rough edges, but I have confidence that the developer is aware and working on them. I had been using OmniOutliner for this, but NotePlan’s day-per-note construct and it’s ability to use Markdown has won me over. In addition, I am using it as my ‘daily log’. For the everyday ‘small rock’ stuff though, NotePlan is doing a great job. I’ve used OmniFocus forever, and that is where I will maintain my major work projects. I have bought it on iOS and enjoy it via Setapp on my Mac. The fact that it’s still non-subscription (and that it offers upgrades!) is definitely contributing to my enthusiasm! I’d never have considered doing that with V1, but V2 is a whole different ball game. However, I’m on the verge of committing to NotePlan as my main task manager. And I’m not quite sure why Calendar supports both tags (hashtags) and mentions (at-tags), but Notes doesn’t (hashtags only). It seems to me that the Notes function could do with further refinement (notably folders, perhaps). The only thing I’m still a little doubtful about is how well NotePlan will handle a LOT of data. I’ve made a number of suggestions to the very amiable developer, who is extremely responsive. you can “archive” completed tasks (which means they’re shunted down to the bottom of the Note/Calendar page this is a nice touch) integration with Apple Calendar, Reminders is excellent one-off to-dos are best inserted in Calendar days it’s easy to roll over projects in Notes, because there’s a “reschedule all tasks” function in Notes as well as in Calendar - nice touch! projects are best handled in Notes, with tags to filter them any to-dos then appear in the upper part of the Calendar page you can access the NotePlan folder in iCloud, meaning you can edit NotePlan notes/to-dos in the Markdown editor of your choice (should you so wish!) the functions involving interaction between Calendar and Notes are consistent, and work fast and well (including sync via iCloud) I’ve been cautiously using it for task management for the last week or so. I have some issues with figuring out how to use it properly with the notes and scheduling, but it is really a nice little program. I was trying not to CRIMP but couldn’t resist NotePlan, especially when I found out everything was stored in plain text.Īfter using for about a week I am really enjoying it’s unique approach. I also watched his other video on how to use NotePlan as a Bullet Journal. Feedback from our recent Qt for Beginners webinar series indicated a need for some basic tutorials for beginners. As the match goes on, the game will periodically delete entire areas of the map with one minute countdowns. While similar titles use the tried-and-true shrinking circle model to force players together, Hyper Scape is much more deliberate. This isn’t ideal when faced with how the map shrinks. As a result, those seeking to be stealthier and move unnoticed will have to avoid sprinting and spend a lot of time crouching. On top of that, the setting uses a lot of grays and dull colors which make players stand out even more. When sprinting and jumping simultaneously, players will emit bright flashy trails from their shoes which are visible from quite a distance. This mainly has to do with how players appear visually. However, with the way that Hyper Scape is arranged, players will find themselves hunting whether they like it or not. Gatherers focus on looting instead of fighting, and will try to stay under the radar to avoid drawing attention. Hunters fear nothing, dropping into crowded hotspots and fighting their way through. Playing A MatchĪ battle royale usually has two distinct types of players: Hunters and Gatherers. While it’s a simple change, it does add something refreshing to the genre. A crown is hidden somewhere on the map, and should you be lucky enough to find it, you can to secure and protect it from other players to claim victory. The key difference is how Ubisoft introduced an alternative way to win aside from being the last person standing. All the staples are there: 100 players per match, a large landscape that shrinks over time, and loot hotspots. Players can choose solo matches where everyone is on their own or squad matches where it’s team-versus-team. The main game mode of Hyper Scape Season 1 is Crown Rush. Does Hyper Scape have what it takes to draw players’ attention away from competing battle royales? As the game’s first season ‘The First Principle’ gets underway, there is definitely some merit and fun to be had. Players take the role of someone logging into the digital Hyper Scape to play the biggest game, Crown Rush. Ubisoft’s new battle royale Hyper Scape takes place in a virtual world created as an escape from the harsh realities of the not-so-distant future.
